Desire - A Kiss of the Devine

Do you remember your enthusiastic consensual first kiss? Did you feel it in your body? A subtle awakening of desire?

I remember I was kissed under a street lamp in a caravan park in Port St. John's in the Transkei. I was sweet sixteen. Those juicy lips on mine. Surprisingly sweet. No kiss like such a YES kiss - fresh, new and inviting more. I was innocent, young and free (but ma mère was just around the corner) and it went no further. Thinking about it today, brings back a sweet memory...I smile. I felt so alive!

The dictionary says a kiss is “a salute made by touching with lips pressed together and suddenly patting them. From this, I say the dictionary knows nothing about kissing! I rather turn to the poets: Shakespeare said: A kiss is the seal of love. Coledridge called a kiss nectar breathing. Martial, an ancient Roman poet says that a kiss is the fragrance of balsem extracted from aromatic trees; the ripe odor yielded by the teeming of saffron; the perfume of fruits mellowing in their winter buds; the flowery meadows in summer; amber warmed by the hand of a girl; a bouquet of flowers that attracts bees.

There is something about desire in a first kiss - spontaneous, innocent and wildly in the moment. Sadly, we tend to forget how desire feels as we grow older. Fear of failure, boredom, discontent or hurriedness are some of the killers of desire! But desire is everywhere and inside us! It invites us to be conscious and tap into our own feelings of aliveness. When we feel into sensations, however subtle, we feel the pulse of life - even when we feel pain in your bodies.

To explain desire in a more intimate soulful way:

Desire is a longing to be kissed by the One who knows you: Yourself. As Richard Rohr writes in Immortal Diamond In finding your True Self, you will have found a reference point for God] that is both utterly within you and utterly beyond you at the very same time. St. Catherine of Genoa shouted as she ran through the streets of town, just as Colossians shouted to both Jews and pagans, The mystery of Christ is within you – your hope of Glory (Col. 1:27). As Song of Songs (1:2) poetically says: Let Him smother me with kisses - His Spirit-kiss divine.

As you remember your first Kiss, take a few moments to think of yourself as being kissed by Divine Love which is always inside you - as YOU kissing yourself with tenderness, devotion and forgiveness.
